Mendoza Line Update

If things stay like this after five weeks of the 2011 MLS season, I may have to adjust the MLS Mendoza Line of 1.20 points per game…downward.  But I’ll wait and see if some of these teams can break out of this mediocre stage.

It seems as if most teams are playing to the wildcard zone, with nine of 18 teams having an average of one point per game or lower.  Chivas USA needs a win this week week at Buck Shaw Stadium against San Jose or they risk being cut adrift after only six weeks, with just a .60 points per game average.  Even a draw won’t help much.

Teams that moved above the line:

  • Portland  -  Two games at home in front of the Timbers Army did wonders.  Portland moved into ninth overall and a 1.40 PPG.
  • DC United  -  Matched the Timbers’ 1.40 PPG with a convincing win against Toronto FC.

Teams that moved below the line:

  • New England – Less than stellar games against Vancouver, a Real Salt Lake of mostly reserves, and Houston this week moved the Revs to a point per game from 1.40.  They’re still in 12th overall so no need to hit the panic button yet.
  • Toronto FC – Losing to DC United this week moved them to 13th with a 1.0 PPG.
  • Sporting Kansas City – The loss to Columbus dropped them to 15th overall with a 1.00 PPG.  They need to find a way to hang in there until they get a home game in their new stadium in June.

The median points earned among all teams thus far is six, with an average of 6.94 PPG.
