2008 – Rule Change #1: Qualifying for MLS Cup was changed to top three in each conference, followed by the next two highest point totals regardless of conference.

2008 – Rule Change #2: Near the end of 2008, it was decided that all MLS teams would be allowed to enter the 2009 US Open Cup 2009, instead of the previous top six auto-qualify, and the rest qualify via a knockout tourney.

2008 – Rule Change #3: Near the end of 2008, it was decided that no MLS team would play in both the CONCACAF Champions League and Superliga for that calendar year. Columbus and Houston qualified for the CCL via winning the Supporters’ Shield and finishing second overall, respectively. This changed the qualification so that 3rd through 6th places would be in Superliga 2009, instead of the original first through fourth places.
